Champ: K'Naan

Champ: K’Naan

The MOBOs’ Best African Act award went to Canadian-Somali rapper K’Naan . The category, which also featured Nigerian producer/rapper J.J.C., Ethiopian musician, Mulatu Astatke who is also known as the father of Ethio-Jazz, the dynamic duo of Nigeria, P-Square and Ghanaian pop star Tinny.

K’Naan became well known after his catchy anthem ‘Wave Your Flag’ became Coca-Cola’s 2010 World Cup theme song. The video to the song, which also featured Black Eyed Peas band member Will-I-Am, virally conquered the internet over the World Cup season. This catapulted K’Naan to the top of the music industry globally and largely in Africa. His success in Africa was aided by the fact than he was born and partly grew up in Somalia, before he migrated to Canada. He also performs regularly in Africa.

K’Naan is a hard worker who has featured on many other artists’ songs and albums including Nas and Damian Marley’s Distant Relatives. He capitalised on the success of his single Wave Your Flag and began to champion his brand of hip hop in the USA and Canada and therefore making his name a household name in his adopted home. He joined other big names like Tinie Tempah and JLS on the list of this year’s winners. Congratulations to K’Naan. There were no reports of a performance by Gamu Nhengu as was rumoured by other papers.
