Rewarded:Munyaradzi Chidzonga

Supporters of Munyaradzi Chidzonga, the Zimbabwean former big brother Africa All-stars contestant were irate that he did not win the final prize of $US200000. Munyaradzi’s supporters took to the streets of Harare after learning that Uti Nwachukwu of Nigeria had been announced the winner. Munyaradzi and his fans felt cheated and luckily for Munyaradzi, there were people in high places who also sympathised with him. The infamously rich president of the country was behind him and so was another businessman. The businessman, Philip Chiyangwa, rallied other supporters to raise $US300000 for a trust fund for Munyaradzi Chidzonga. This came after raucous calls for the big brother vote to be reviewed, by Munyaradzi’s fans. According to a major Zimbabwean newspaper, The Herald, the country’s president handed the cheque to the big brother finalist. The Herald also says that the money which was raised by Mr Philip Chiyangwa and National Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment Board chaired by Mr David Chapfika was compensation for what they called a ‘flawed’ vote. Munyaradzi, who is a fan of the controversial president was said to be elated when he returned to the country and got greeted with the news that he would get handed a $300000 cheque by his childhood hero. He was quoted as saying that “he was living his dream”. Mugabe is also said to have spoken good of Mr Chidzonga. It is unclear whether all of the money Munyaradzi was raised entirely from the public or whether the president and the other businessmen contributed. Is this genuine promotion of a talented fellow African, a political gimmick? It also unknown to us whether the other losing candidates received such gestures in their respective home countries. Diasporaw.net will carry out investigations and we will keep you posted.
