Konvict’s Sarkodie Waving The Flag for Ghana

Rhymer: Sarkodie

Ghana’s fastest rapper, Sarkodie is making his mark on the music scene. The M.C. who chooses to rhyme in his mother tongue while dropping a few words and phrases in English scored big when he signed to Akon’s Konvict Muzik record label earlier this year. Senegal born Akon is one of the biggest African Diaspora artists and on his quest to dominate the world, he decided to tap Ghana’s top M.C. as one of his major flag bearers in Africa. The announcement was made earlier this year at a Radio Station in Accra and in attendance was Babs, Konvict’s front man in Africa, who gave a narration of how Sarkodie’s flow and delivery captivated him and one of his advisors. Also present was British Konvict Muzik rapper, Sway, who also a proud Ghanaian. He gave his testimony on Sarkodie, who he had endorsed way before Babs had thought of signing him. Sarkodie was presented with a Konvict Muzik emblazoned sweater and he expressed his surprise on the development.
Within a few months Sarkodie and Sway went into the studio and recorded a song entitled “Lay Away” in which Sarkodie justifies his signing to Konvict with fast-paced and powerful verses that could force rappers such as Busta Rhymes to retire. Sway does his stuff in his English twang and Jayso sings the catchy chorus. The video of the track begins with an excerpt from Akon’s endorsement speech being played from on an old and abandoned T.V. set and the rest of it features the actual players in different Ghetto areas around Ghana. This track is only the beginning for the trail-blazing rapper who hails from Tema(also featured in the video), 30 miles east of Accra. Born Michael Owusu, and also known as Obidi, Sarkodie made his name after battling and knocking out 15 MC’s on a Ghanaian hip-hop show. His unquestionable abilities might propel him and Ghana’s Hiplife to global heights and with a partner such as Konvict Muzik, nothing is impossible. Sarkodie joins stars such as T-Pain, Kadinall Offishiall and Colby O’Donis. Lady Gaga on the other hand could be accessible as she is also signed to Akon’s alternative record label KonLive. Having links such as the above cannot be overlooked.

Sarkodie has won several awards in Ghana, his name was also put forward for a 2010 M.O.B.O African Music nomination, although he failed to make it to the final list. It has been recently announced that he is nominated in a category of the M.T.V African Music Awards to be held in December 2010. The rapper, who refused to follow trends while setting some of his own though his hard work, is bound for many great things. His originality and consistency, together with his newly found success has led to him giving birth to his own musical offspring in Ghana in the form of teenage sensation Mohammed Awaal, who flows and rhymes in a similar fashion to that of Konvict’s new star. Sarkodie has shown support to Awaal and is said to have or to be in the process of signing him.

In his endorsement speech, Sarkodie’s new boss, Akon professed his desire to ‘integrate music and fashion and all of entertainment and bring it to Africa the way they are doing it in the United States’. Akon who has in the past seriously considered signing a Zimbabwean singer/producer/rapper is probably one of the major African born musicians who has stayed true to Africa and has seriously demonstrated his commitment to the continent. This stance has led us to speculate that Akon may be the mystery international star behind the new African super-group, ONE8 which also features Ghanaian Group, 4×4.
