Diaspora Link Up: UK Zambians

Outstanding Zambian personalities living in the UK are getting honoured with special excellence awards tonight. The UKZambians awards for excellence event is being held at the Zambian High Commissioner in London.

Among the nominees is current Miss Southern Africa UK, Fernanda Kanyendo. The gorgeous young model has been nominated in the “Young Achievers” category and she is going head to head with teenage star actor Oletunji Ebun-Cole who is of Zambia and Nigerian parantage, among others. Another beauty, Andella Chileshe Mathews, who is also the reigning Miss Zambia UK, is nominated for the “Inspiration Award”. One of Andella’s notable appearances is at Miss Universe Contest, where she represented Zambia. The world class model is also running a campaign to motivate the Zambian Diaspora to actively and positively contribute to their home country. She is also a BEFFTA award winner and has inspired people through her charity work, in which she also raised a billion Zambian Kwachas for an HIV/AIDS charity.

Young Zambian professional boxer, Michael Norgroove who also proudly goes by the monicker, “The Zambezi Hitman” is nominated in the “Sports Personality of the Year” category. Michael’s career as an amateur boxer flourished throughout the past 3 years as he plied his trade in different parts of England. He claimed the London and North East counties championships in 2008 before facing defeat in the National final. He has however stayed undefeated since turning professional in April this year. Other categories are “Entertainement Award” which has Henry Mumbi aka DJ Shimbundu as a leading nominee, “Entrepreneur Award” with nominees such as nurse Rhoda Manda and restaurateur Dorothy Mubiana and “Life Time Achievement” award in which the Zambian High commissioner is the selected recipient.
