Special Rep: Angelique Kidjo

Some readers may recognise the name Angelique Kidjo from the mention of it, some may recognise her from memories of her performing at the World Cup 2010 or other venues. For those who don’t already know who Angelique is, you are about to find out. She is one of Benin’s outstanding musical flag bearers and an ambassador of true African music.

Last night she appeared, not once but twice, on US mainstream entertainment TV channel, BET. She performed at the BET honors where she paid tribute to famed Somali-American supermodel, Iman and also appeared on The Mo’Nique show. At the BET honors, Angelique “brought the stage to life” with her energetic entrance and a colourful performance of songs “Move On Up” and Afirika respectively. Between the songs, she dedicated Afirika to Iman and remarked that the world needs more Iman(s), she also stated that Africa had given the world “joy, music, love and compassion” as choir members walked on to the stage to join her in song. She did not disappoint, she gave the crowd more than what they had bargained for.

Other performances included Trey Songz, Keisha Cole and The Chick Corea band, among others. Angelique has several world class albums under her belt and has combined with a number of A-list stars both on records and on stage. Before the performance last night, an excited Angelique twitted “Tonight I’ll be singing on BET TV twice! First honoring Iman with afirika, then on the Mo’Nique Show singing Move On Up…”. This is a continuation of great things for the African diva.
