Africa Fashion Week London 2013, a Great Success

The Africa Fashion Week London organisers have managed to stage 3 successful and consecutive annual events since 2011. This year’s event was held between 1 and 3 August at the Old Truman Brewery, Brick Lane, London. It featured some of the most outstanding works by designers from countries such as South Africa, Nigeria and Ghana. There were several items at the exhibition including clothes, jewelry and notebooks. Among the designers who showcased their cuts were, Angolan/British Agata Reis, London’s Jennifer Onah of Ferona, Huda Dagnew and 14 year old Nigerian Tomisola Ladega.

Besides showcasing African Fashion to the world and prominent luminaries, the event also honours those who promote and support African Fashion. The event awarded Malawi fashion week Cheif Executive Officer andfFashion icon Dawa Loga Lemberger for introducing Malawi Fashion Week while the Malawian Minister of Tourism and Culture, Rachel Mozombwe Zulu was also given an award for supporting the initiative. They were invited to the event to collect their awards. According to Nyasatimes.com, part of the invitation letter read “The aim of the event is to showcase the best of African arts and fashion to the most influential people globally, including First Ladies, Ambasardords, Members of Parliament , celebrities and VIPs. We would also be recognizing those who have contributed to the growth of African Fashion, youth empowerment and empowerment of women in Africa and we are pleased to announce that you have emerged winner of the African Acheivers Awards”

Sinem Bilen-Onabanjo, spoke to BBC on behalf of Africa Fashion Week, saying that the purpose of the event was to fill the gap that was left out by the absence of a major African fashion event in Europe. The BBC also reported that Africa Fashion Week has become the biggest single African fashion event outside of Africa, With the London event attracting up to 20000 visitors in 2012.

One of the days featured a performance by Britain’s Got Talent finalists, CEO Dancers.
