For more than a decade, FashionAFRICANA has united people from around Pittsburgh through yearly fashion events. But this is not your typical fashion show, says founder Demeatria Boccella.

“It’s more of a cultural type of experience.”

Through music, dance and design, FashionAFRICANA commemorates the African diaspora and celebrates black beauty and diversity. This year’s gathering — its 12th anniversary — will be held Saturday at the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust Arts Education Center, 805 Liberty Ave., Downtown.

On tap this time will be African art pieces, as well as FashionAFRICANA’s first retail pop-up where guests can purchase some of the art, jewelry and fashions from previous events. The fashion show will showcase looks Pittsburgh-based designer Kiya Tomlin created for FashionAFRICANA.

The evening also will feature a performance by dancer and choreographer Jill Vallery and other performers from the musical “FELA!” The Tony Award-winning show is based on the life of Fela Kuti, the creator of Afrobeat rhythm and harmonies that challenged Nigeria’s dictatorship.

“My goal every year, or one of the goals, is to bring together a very diverse audience to appreciate the work and the presentation of the work that we’re celebrating,” Ms. Boccella says.

The show starts at 8 p.m., with a VIP reception at 7 p.m. Tickets are $35 for general admission or $75 for VIP access at www.showclix.com. A portion of the proceeds will support FashionAFRICANA’s youth education program The Utopia Project. Information: www.FashionAFRICANA.com.
