Africa Does It Big At The Oscars

Good Run: Chiwetel in 12 Years A Slave

“Winning big” isn’t a phrase that is usually associated with Africans when it comes to major film awards. Steve McQueen’s movie “12 Years A Slave” has come around to prove that wrong by not only winning Best Film in UK’s BAFTA awards but by following up with a Best Motion Picture vanquish at the American sponsored Oscar awards, beating out Gravity, American Hustle and Captain Philips among others. The British fronted movie was starred by non other than British-Nigerian actor Chiwetel Ejiofor. Chiwetel himself won Best actor in the BAFTAs but this time around it was another one of the movie’s stars from Africa who walked away with a big prize. Best actress in supporting role was none other than Mexican-Kenyan Lupita Nyong’o.

The song “Ordinary Love” from Mandela: Long walk To Freedom was featured in the award ceremony in the Best Original Song but lost out to “Let If Go” from Frozen. Actor in A Supporting Role nominee, Somalian-American Barkhad Abdi for movie Captain Philips also lost out to Jared Leto from Dallas Buyers Club.

What matters to us is that Africa is penetrating.
