Deported: Freshly Ground

South African musical outfit Freshlyground was denied entry into Zimbabwe on Sunday, a development the Harare authorities tried to pin on poor arrangements by the organisers but that observers say is linked to a 2010 video in which the group mocked President Robert Mugabe. The seven-member group, which was due to be the closing act at the Harare International Festival of the Arts on Sunday night, was deported at Harare International Airport and bundled onto the next flight to Johannesburg.

Immigration official Francis Mabika said the group was sent back it did not have a valid work permit.

“Their permit had not yet been processed so they could not be allowed to enter the country,” Mabika told the state-run Herald.

In 2010 the group was banned from playing a show in Harare after they released a music video (Chicken to Change), in which they mock Mugabe for clinging to power.
