BBC Compares Lipala Dance by Kenyan Quartert Sauti Sol To Psy’s Gangnam Style

What a way to start a new year, for a musical group that has already left the previous year on positive trajectory.

Before calling Sauti Sol “the hottest band in Kenya right now“, writers at the BBC made the following remarks.

One of Kenya’s best-known bands are on a mission to reclaim the country’s dance floors and create their own national Gangnam Style hit. So they’ve taken a traditional dance and made it cool.

The  article went on to highlight that the group refrained from copying dance moves from foreign videos as had become the norm in their surroundings, but rather, chose to be original. Band member Bien-Aime Baraza was quoted as saying “We never had access to those music videos and that’s why we came up with phenomenal dance styles“.

Another group member was also quoted as saying that “The Lipala dance is actually a dance that has been practiced by the Luhya tribe for the longest time ever,” . So we suppose, theirs is a modification and modernisation of the thing.

It seems the MTV Europe’s Best African Act 2014 winners are geared up to put the Kenyan flag firmly on the African music map from 2015 and beyond.
