Here Are The Winners And Reviews From The 2015 MTV Africa Music Awards

Best Female: Yemi Alade

Best Female: Yemi Alade

The 2015 MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMAs) took place in Durban, South Africa last night. They were ironically hosted by American actor and comedian Anthony Anderson and as if to top up to the irony, American acts Ne-yo and Jhene Aiko got the most stage time with their performances. Performing more than one song each, as African acts such as Sauti Sol and Yemi Alade being forced to share a slot.

Seventeen awards and honours were handed out throughout the course of the night at the fifth edition of the show.

Nigeria acts dominated the Best Artist categories, with Yemi Alade, Davido, P-Square  and Patoranking taking home Best Male, Female, Group, and New Act, respectively. P-Square were also recognised with the Artist of the Decade honour, while D’Banj was awarded the very first MAMA Evolution award honouring “established artists who have made an indelible mark on African and global music culture, taken African music to new territories around the world, pushed the boundaries of creativity, and shaped the soundscape of contemporary Africa.”

Rapper Cassper Nyovest made South Africa proud by winning the Best Hip-Hop artist award, a category which we felt was not properly represented, with hot rappers such as Ghana’s Sarkodie missing from the list of nominees. Cassper’s fellow South African rapper AKA managed to scoop Best Collaboration for his hit collaboration “All Eyes On Me” with Burna Boy, Da LES and JR. Newly minted The Daily Show host  Trevor Noah was awarded Personality of the Year to add the number of honours to the entertainers of the host country.

The US acts did a good job with their performances but the African performers, such as Sauti Sol, Yemi Alade and Diamond, were on point and from our angle, they made the crowd happy. Sadly we did not catch all of the show as the online link was very temperamental. We think MTV needs to improve that, and the quality of the physical award itself.
